We are committed to improving health care for women in the province of Nova Scotia. We are working with government, medical professionals and industry to improve access to procedures critical to women's health. Our aim is to reduce wait times and give doctors the tools they need to deliver the best care possible.
2023 saw the Orchid Gala Committee working with the Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation to build a new area at the hospital that will treat pelvic health conditions*. The Deanne Reeve Pelvic Health Suite will focus on gynecology and urology services and will improve patient comfort, reduce wait times and expand services.
In 2024 our focus turns to the IWK Women's Heath Centre. Our goal is to rehouse the Gynaecology department presently located on the 6th floor. It is in need of an upgrade which will take several years to realize. In the interim, we are working with the Gynaecology team at the IWK to identify equipment we can purchase this year that will greatly improve their ability of offer the best care possible for women in our region.
“Many of the advances we make, particularly in gynecologic surgical care are due to new technologies. This equipment allows the team to provide state of the art care, which is less invasive and has improved outcomes. Our team is grateful to the foundation and donors that provide the tools we need to improve care for women.”
~ Dr. Jim Bentley, Head of Obstetrics & Gynecology for Central Region
Pelvic floor conditions refer to a range of disorders that affect the muscles, nerves and connective tissues that support the pelvic organs, including the bladder, uterus, and rectum. These conditions can cause a range of symptoms, including urinary and fecal incontinence, pelvic pain, and sexual dysfunction.
Studies indicate up to 40% of women will experience some form of pelvic floor dysfunction in their lifetime. Despite the high prevalence of these conditions, many women in Nova Scotia face significant barriers in accessing appropriate healthcare services.

Studies indicate up to 40% of women will experience some form of pelvic floor dysfunction in their lifetime. Despite the high prevalence of these conditions, many women in Nova Scotia face significant barriers in accessing appropriate healthcare services.
That’s why we started working with the Dartmouth General to open the Deanne Reeve Pelvic Health Suite. Under the direction of Dr. Scott Mawdsley, Chief of Surgery at Dartmouth General, and Urologist Dr. Jon Duplisea, the Suite will be the new home to hysteroscopy and cystoscopy procedures.
Deanne Reeve was a generous soul who truly touched all who met her. She passed away in 2020 following a late diagnosis of cervical cancer. The new Pelvic HealthSuite at the Dartmouth General Hospital that will bear her name, will improve access to pelvic health care and procedures, reduce wait times, and save lives
